Conference Session: “Tech in the Classroom”

STEM and Computer Science need not be confined to one class or classroom. These educators and students are using it to their advantage in their classrooms and talking about how using and developing technology allows them to expand their understanding of traditional subjects and prepare them for a rapidly changing world. Topics covered will range from using tech in a traditional classroom to developing new approaches to teaching that utilize technology.

Dr. Betsy Hargrove has been the Superintendent of the Avondale Elementary School District since 2012 and was previously the Assistant Superintendent since March 2009. She provides on-going leadership in creating a positive climate of high expectations for all involved with the educational programs of the district. She also works to engage in the continuous improvement of the Avondale educational community by implementing and monitoring the achievement of district goals and mission for every student to grow as a thinker, problem solver and communicator to pursue a future without limits.

Dr. Hargrove holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Southern Maine, master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Fordham University, and a doctorate in educational administration and supervision from Arizona State University. Dr. Hargrove has presented at the American Educational Research Association, Character Education Forum, National Staff Development Council Mega Conference, TAP National Conference. In addition, she was awarded the 2015 Administrators Impact Award by the Computer Science Teacher Association for her advocacy of their K-8 coding classes for all students during the school day. Dr. Hargrove participates in the national STEM EcoSystem Convening and this past year presented sessions on coding in the classroom at the 21st Century STEM Conference, National School Board Association 2016 and U.S. News STEM Solutions National Leadership Conference 2016.

Dr. Hargrove comes from a family of educators and lives with her two incredible daughters, Morgan, 17 and Clare, 13.

1Seth BeuteSeth Beute is the principal brand of the new Phoenix Coding Academy, a public high school focused on innovation and technology through inquiry learning.  A 12-year veteran in the Phoenix Union High School District, Seth has served in the role of Facilitator of Virtual Instruction, overseeing online education in the curriculum division and 10 years as a CTE Computer and Network Technology Instructor.  Seth also worked in elementary tech education, school district I.T. support, wrote and taught courses for an inner-city technology and arts center, and spent time writing code and content for a national website. Seth is a father, husband, reader, gamer, nature enthusiast, and life-long learner.
